An actual renovation post!

Yes, you read it peeps, hold onto your seats, here's a renovation post!
We have started doing the nightmarish job that is painting the exterior of the house. We will be tackling it one small area at a time.
Above is the first patch. It's at the back of the house. Some of the boards were very worn, but Lyn has sanded, bogged, sanded and wood primed the surface. Most of these weatherboards had to come right back to timber. It appears in it's 101 year life, Molly's Maison has only been painted twice. I somehow don't think we'll be so lucky not to have to paint for aother 50 years!

Paint colours...
well, we are sticking with the current theme which is a cream with Deep Ocean colourbond roof (there's another massive and hideous job - replacing the old roof). It looks like we will go with Wattyl colours Vienna Creme (sounds tasty) with a highlight in Diva White (not sure about that name). We will use Haymes Ultra Premium as we like that it's a family owned Australian business.

(sorry about the terrible pics)
I've been wandering around with this big painted swatch and so far so good.
We even took the small paint chips on a neighbourhood walk so I could compare against other house colours I liked.
It's a serious business.
Boy oh boy was it hot here yesterday! I hope you all had a lovely weekend and the week ahead is a dandy one!
Xx

  1. I'm exhausted just reading about that! I know you'll both do a fabulous job, like you've done with everything else. Hot in Hobart...no way :))

  2. Hooray!! Big job but it will be so worth it. We've still not finished our exterior...the underneath of the deck and carport still need to be painted. Love how you've chosen your paint and are supporting local business. xx

  3. Oh Sarah I feel your pain! We've been painting for weeks and it's a truly hideous job! Worth it though in the long run :) love your colour choices!

  4. Goodluck Sarah, it is such a huge investment not to mention stressful decision. I really like your colour selection. ;-)

  5. Sarah it will all look wonderful! A "house painting" tip we were given a few years back. Paint one side of the house each year. That way every four years the house is re-painted completely and it doesn't seem like such a massive, overwhelming job. It also keeps any little repairs in check so they don't turn into big, expensive jobs either

  6. Oh that's exciting even if it's a bit of a chore.
We're meant to re-coat our boards with the preservative we chose.
But it smelt so bad that I don't even want to consider it yet, especially now when it's warm and the windows are open a lot. The smell would just drift in. Can't wait to see Molly's Maison look refreshed.

  7. Choosing paint colours.... I don't envy you!
Sometimes starting is the hardest part and then it just flows and you will be SO happy when you have finished it.

  9. I think you have pinched our weather!!!!!
A little trick (for when you are finished!) that a painter told me was that if you wash the timbers down thoroughly twice a year then the paint should remain good for 20 years!!! He said it was the dust and mildews that broke down the paint.
It is going to look wonderful.

    1. Good tip, thanks. Washing is much easier than painting too!

  14. I have a Qland style workers cottage, and I repainted recently and went with the deep ocean, the roof was already that colour colourbond, trims are deep ocean and I did the house paperbark...a cream shade. Instead of painting the side walls, I had paperbark colour colourbond put on with insulation underneath. Can you believe those walls were only a single thickness...no wonder it was so cold and the rain came in where the walls didn't quite meet the floor. Yours will look great when it's done, well worth all the angst.
